Social Insurance Number

Social Insurance Number (SIN): you need this to work in Canada

The Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine digit number used by the government to provide different programs to workers in Canada. Everyone who wants to work in Canada, including Canadian citizens, must have a SIN. You also need a SIN card to receive any government benefits such as Social Assistance.

How to Apply
To apply for a Social Insurance Number you must provide the true/original document that proves your identity and status in Canada. All documents must be in either French or English.

The quickest way to obtain a SIN card is by going in person to your local Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) office. There, you can fill out the necessary forms and show the proper identification. If you send your identification in the mail, you reduce risk losing precious documents.

From the time your application is received, it can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks for you to receive your SIN card.

Keep Your Number Private
Your Social Insurance Number is a private number and it can be used to access your private information. It should not be given to unauthorized people or organizations. Employers, banks and government agencies usually have reason and legal right to know your SIN. Businesses often ask for your SIN, and use it as an identification number. They do not have legal right to ask for your SIN, and you should be cautious of who you give it to. Offer other forms of identification such as your birth certificate instead.
