The quickest way to obtain a SIN card is by going in person to your local
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) office. There, you can fill out the necessary forms and show the proper identification. If you send your identification in the mail, you reduce risk losing precious documents.
From the time your application is received, it can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks for you to receive your SIN card.
Keep Your Number Private
Your Social Insurance Number is a private number and it can be used to access your private information. It should not be given to unauthorized people or organizations. Employers, banks and government agencies usually have reason and legal right to know your SIN. Businesses often ask for your SIN, and use it as an identification number. They do not have legal right to ask for your SIN, and you should be cautious of who you give it to. Offer other forms of identification such as your birth certificate instead.
